[Q] Help with bootloop on unknown gen 8.9" Fire topic

Hi, I was given a kindle fire 8.9" stuck on bootloop.

After googling a bit, I need help with:

A) How do I figure out which generation this device is? Is there a picture gallery somewhere or something?

B) Is there a way I can get out of bootloop without getting a fastboot cable? (It's probably running the most current firmware as of January '15, but not sure).

C) Are there different procedures for bootloading depending on what Gen this is?

D) Is wiping with a bootloader as risky (bricking wise) as cracking and if so, can/should I just skip that part and go straight to putting a custom ROM on it?
