[Q] Android Lollipop: How do I gain recovery? [Need Help] topic

I have not rooted my phone yet and previously come from using nexus devices.

I'm on stock lollipop rom and was wondering how I should proceed.

step one would be backing up the TA partition.

following that, unlock the bootloader. After that I was wondering if I need to downgrade to kitkat to continue or if I could flash a kernel with twrp and try to get into twrp, wipe everything and flash cm12.1 + gapps + supersu and proceed from there.

My question is, do I need to downgrade to kitkat stock to proceed or is there a way for me to gain recovery and flash a rom without downgrading?
