how do you restore app data topic

I've had root so long I have no idea how to function. I have a rooted m8.
I'm trying to get some app data restored on this new s6 edge. I've tried google to restore but no app data is coming in. Tried helium but doesn't seem to work on s6 i never get a green check on the device side.
Titanium needs root...
many other backup apps i've looked at require root for app data. I'm not sure why as app data should be on /data and accessible. so any thoughts? what am i missing in this non-root world?:confused:
