[Q] Download Mode and Ubuntu topic

I am attempting to root this device (the Cricket variant) using the instructions on this forum, but have run into a serious problem. While Ubuntu sees the device when booted regularly and will pass control over to Virtualbox, Ubuntu (14.04) seems unable to see the device when it is in Odin mode, making it impossible in turn to see it in Virtualbox and perform the root. Has anyone successfully gotten Ubuntu to see the device while in Odin/Download mode?
