Going from CM11 to CM12 -- status 6, status 7 errors topic

Coming from: CM11-Snapshot 11
Going to: CM12 nighties
recovery: CWM 6.0.4.5 (latest)

latest official bootloader/radio flashed through fastboot (5.1.0 (LMY47I)) --HHZ11k

Tried to upgrade two ways:

Using fastboot -- after clean wipe of cache, data, system, factory reset... fastboot gave error.

Using recovery -- same after clean wipe, mounting /sdcard and doing an adb push of zips.

cm-12-20150404-NIGHTLY-hammerhead.zip gives a status 6 error -- error in data/media/0/cm12...

cm-12-20150329-NIGHTLY-hammerhead.zip gives a status 7 error -- bootloader HHz12d is supported; this device has HHZ11k

CM11-snapshot 11 did installed successfully

So, what now? Do I downgrade the bootloader (and radio) to install CM 12? Try TWRP? I thought fastboot flashed ROMs.

CWM does ask me if I want to root device... I say yes each time!
