Cricket - OTA not available for BYOD devices (verified) topic
I just confirmed with Cricket Support:
Sophie: In this case Cricket is offering this update but only for Cricket devices, Not for BYOD's in this case I recommend you to borrow a sim card from AT&T and update this lollipop android version
Sophie: The Updates for your phone, only become available through the server of the company where your phone Originally comes from?
So I borrowed a Straight Talk SIM from a co-worker and did the OTA and gave him his SIM back. (be warned it' s a 1160.28MB download and very slow) :)
Hope this helps clear up all of the frustration.
